Biosolids are helpful ?!?!?

What do the terms “industrial agriculture” and “sustainable agriculture” might mean?


What do you think the terms industrial agriculture, and sustainable agriculture mean? Well, I think that the industrial agriculture means that people are using chemicals to make food grow faster and selling stuff for cheaper price. I think that sustainable agriculture, is planting food without the help of chemicals but selling it for more.


Lets see the definitions of these two terms:


"Industrial Agriculture. A food system that emerged in the 20th century that provides large scale agricultural production.   Industrial agriculture has had a tremendous impact on the world's water resources and soil quality because of the massive use of chemical pesticides, herbicides, insecticides and fertilizers. Industrialized food systems do not encourage sustainable development in developing countries. Cheap food is exported to these countries making it difficult for communities to develop their own local community farming systems."

An example of Sustainable agriculture is using biosolids(Our waste) people might think that is nasty but in many ways it is useful. For example biosolids could help improve our soil nutrients. It contains many nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur necessary for plants to grow.

This is a picture of the process that takes place when they take our feces and turn them into fertilizer. 

Even though our waste is a good source of nutrients, it still contains many chemicals from our own bodies. The solid waste have to go through the wastewater plant and go through many physical, chemical, and biological process. This process makes sure that the water is clean and renew. It also make sure that the waste from the water would be used as fertilizer for the plants.


I think that this process is an amazing step for out society. But i hope they find an more effective method and way to help fertilize the food because i don't feel like eating my own poop for the rest of my life.

Designer babies... Good or Bad?

OK to start up this blog i have to ask you what is Designer Babies? Well, Designer Babies are a term used by the media to describe the future of modifying or selecting our children's genes for what we think looks good. I Believe that the scientist are expanding their knowledge on this subject because they found out many ways that could help. I also believe that the world would improve more if science continues to improve. I was surprise when I first found out that you can design babies by just using Advanced Reproductive technique, InVitro Fertilisation or IVF. I think that parents use designer babies to change the traits and looks of a baby. They should only do it when there is a leathal desease or a mental illness in the genes of the family.

Most people disagree on why they would like to design there babies. I personally think that they should only design their babies when it is necessary. Only when the baby has a desease that can't be cure at the moment. Only people with money can afford to design their babies all they want.


Scientist have discovered many ways to help replace out faulty sections of DNA with healthy DNA by doing germ line therapy. It is carried out on an egg, sperm or a tiny fertilized embryo. It is illegal to do on humans but scientist have done it on animals. However, it is legal to modify the faulty genes in the cells of a grown child or an adult to cure diseases this process is called a body cellgene therapy. 


Scientist has also found a way to change the sex of the embryo using two method. The first method is to sort out a sample of the father sperm and fertilizes an egg with either a male or a female sperm. Another Method is called a Pre- implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD). Which is to scan embryos for any genetic disease. It could help save the baby because it could scan for any genetic diseases and possibly save the baby's life.

Protecting Life

Usually when people think biodiversity, we think about nature and animals inside the forest or water. But as time passes we notice that people don't take care of the world and animals are starting to extinct. But the group I am going to introduce is trying to protect life in certain part of the world like in the arctic. This Group is called, WWF (The World Wildlife Fund for Nature). Created in 1972 by Senator Alan Macnaughton and is one of the worlds biggest organization today.

As I said above WWF stands for the World Wide Fund for Natures. It helps raise fund to protect many animals that are in danger of getting hurt and in the process of being extinct. WWF not only protects the ecosystem but also tries to restore the ecosystem. WWF organizes many events that help restore trees and organizes bake sales. 


WWF top priorities are to protect the climate, water and people.  For example one of the lakes that WWF protect is lake superior. It is home to many diffrent animals including, trout, loons, woodland caribous and falcons.  


WWF also started a thing called Earth hour. On a certain day in march everyone turns of the lights for a hour.

I think that WWF is doing a great job protecting our planet and that they are trying to promote what they are doing to the world. I like the fact that they funraise events like bakesales, shoreline clean up, and earth hours to get everyone invoving in protecting the earth.
